Most drippers are designed to work best with a specific filter shape and size, even if some filters look similar at first glance.
A good starting point, simply, is:
- Cone-shaped dripper → cone filter
- Flat-bottom dripper → wave-style filter
- If in doubt, start with the manufacturer-recommended filter
You’re going to want to match the size with the filter that you have in your set up. Some of the most common pairings:
Kalita - Wave
- 155 filters → Kalita 155 dripper (small, 1-2 cups)
- 185 filters → Kalita 185 dripper (medium, 2-4 cups)
V60 - Cone-shaped filters with a pointed bottom.
- V60 01 filters → V60 01 dripper
- V60 02 filters → V60 02 dripper
Origami
- Accept multiple filter styles. Why it’s confusing: Origami is known for being filter-flexible. Both conical and wave filters can work! Flow and cup profile will change depending on which filter you choose.
Filters that almost fit can still brew very differently, so matching the intended filter usually gives the most predictable results.
What dripper you have and how many cups you typically brew is super helpful to deciding what filter; brew size often dictates filter.
