Different dripper and filter materials can slightly affect heat retention, flow, and mouthfeel, but none are “right” or “wrong” - most differences come down to feel and preference, not difficulty.
Dripper materials:
- Plastic: Lightweight, durable, and retains heat well. Great for consistency and everyday use.
- Ceramic: Holds heat once warmed up and often looks beautiful, but can be more sensitive to temperature changes.
- Glass: Neutral and easy to clean, though it loses heat more quickly.
- Metal: Very durable and heats quickly, with a slightly faster brew feel.
Filter materials:
- Paper filters: Clean, clear cups with less oil and sediment. Most common for pour-over brewing.
- Thicker or specialty papers: Can slow flow slightly and soften the cup.
- Metal filters: Allow more oils through, resulting in a fuller, heavier body.
- Cloth filters: Sit between paper and metal, offering a rounder mouthfeel with more texture.
Most brewers are designed with specific filters in mind, so starting with the recommended filter for your dripper is usually the easiest path. From there, experimenting is part of the fun.
