Coffee filters are shaped to support different brewing styles, flow rates, and extraction goals.
Small differences in filter shape, such as cone angle, flat-bottom width, or side wall height, affect how water moves through the coffee bed. Some designs encourage faster flow and clarity, while others promote more contact time and body. Drippers are designed with these differences in mind, which is why certain filters fit or perform better in specific drippers / brewers.
Because filter paper thickness, creping, and manufacturing also vary between brands, two filters that look similar may still behave differently during brewing.
For best results, we recommend starting with the filter style suggested for your dripper (found on our dripper product pages), then experimenting as you gain confidence. Small changes in filter shape can be a useful way to fine-tune taste, but they’re rarely “right” or “wrong.”
